The Beat That Binds
After Their Song Topped The Elite Y101 FM Countdown And The Mp3.Com Philippine Regional Top Songs Survey, “Itsumo” Creators “Dice” Rosaroso And “K9” Calina Are On Their Way To Helping Cebu Music Become An Act To Contend With, Sun*Star features in their Weekend Magazine.
Mango Jam in the early 1990’s was a conglomeration of Cebu’s finest bands representing different genres of music: alternative, rock, hip hop, metal, R&B, rap, and the like. It opened avenues to persisting local artists as well as aspiring ones.
It was rather unimaginable how the two got together today to become Dice and K9, precursor of the phenomenal “Itsumo.” They come from two different worlds; they were incompatible from the start. For one, Dice likes hip hop while K9 preferred alternative music, something that can be considered today as an unusual blend. But there was something that brought them together, something common that made them eligible for “marriage of two minds.” It was their drive to share their talents to make a difference in the local music scene. After all, hip hop nor alternative music was not the measure of things they envisioned to happen.
Coming from the hip hop group called Anthill Mobb, both decided to get together to form a “vehicle” that will showcase their “production” abilities. Initially, Dice and K9 were doing beats for other bands, writing songs for them. “We decided to stay low while we experimented with new beats, until we realized we were making totally different tunes,” says Dice. Quick to point out, K9 said their previous orientation was more on the alternative and hip hop genres. “Some songs made it while most did not. This was a cause of frustrations because we felt our compositions, which by the way were good ones, were not given its due regard, not to mention some engagers did not meet up with monetary arrangement” he confesses.
With their individual abilities in tune and musical arrangements respectively, coupled with resourcefulness and the typical Cebuano resiliency, they decided to make music for themselves. The first song they released as a duo was “Scenario” early in 2002. In November the same year, the song made it to #1 in the local charts. So inspired they decided to do a full length album which was released in March 2003.
The Mobb Music album is a showcase of Dice & K9’s creative musical artistry and versatility, whether it is rock, hip hop or pop. “When we write songs, we take it from direct personal experiences,” says Dice. “In fact, we do not conform to the typical nor glamorous formats” he adds.
“Currently we are preparing to do a second album. The response is just tremendous, in fact inspiring. When you are inspired, you would like to do things a lot better,” says K9. Like everyone else, they too would like to do something to establish a strong local Cebu music industry. “It is just pathetic to note that when we talk about bands, our minds go to Manila and instantly connect with groups that are based there. We have very good and highly talented groups that can stand alongside with those in the capital; we just have not heard them play because no one has opened the opportunity for them. That was what happened to those great bands during Mango Jam. They left Cebu and thrived somewhere else. It’s a pity because they could have been cornerstones for a strong local Cebu music industry today,” he continues.
In retrospect, they simply feel they got to do what they got to do. Asked about being overnight celebrities with “Itsumo” topping both local and international charts in less than a month after its debut in the local airwaves, Dice & K9 blushes, “Naaah! We are mall-rats and we enjoy being that way.”<br>
